Man that's cool. (and makes more sense than my postmodern art hypothesis.) Thanks a lot Alan for clearing that up. As enjoyable as my random speculations are its awesome finding out the truth.

It's traditional here for a groom to carry his bride over a bridge. (I'm not sure about the exact significance.) Later they put a padlock on the bridge as a way to preserve the good fortune they received from the walk over the bridge.

Not sure what happened to Zappa, though...

I saw some padlocks in Florence and found out they are called lucchetti d'amore - maybe these are the same thing - from a newspaper article:

'The tradition of the metallic love vows has developed a series of procedural rules over the years. For example, couples must throw the keys into the river immediately after attaching the locks .
They must also write their names on one side of the lock in felt-tipped pen, adding the date of their passage through Florence on the other side. Chains and overly large locks are frowned upon.'

==If I cannot overwhelm with my quality, I will overwhelm with my quantity.== ==You can't be a real country unless you have a beer & an airline. It helps if you have some kind of a football team, or some nuclear weapons, but at the very least you need a beer.== ==To read too many books is harmful.== ==The press is reporting things that are absolutely irrelevant to any of our lives & they are sensationalistic & it is damaging.==
Where in this comment is Frank Zappa? All quotes are from Zs of the past 200 years.
