Dave is…
On a 19.5 hour flight back to New York City that stops over in Senegal.
Despite the fact school will be done by Nov. 9th and the fact that people have already started to take off (notably Max who left yesterday and who will be sorely missed) I did not have any attention of returning stateside till right before Christmas.
However Meeta getting married is not an event that can be missed no matter what continent you’re on. So while the practical thing to do would be to tell her sorry and send a gift, the practical thing is way less fun.
I confess the flight wasn’t all that fun. CT to Joburg, Joburg to NYC. Its 19.5 hours including the stop-over for an hour in Dakar, Senegal. In addition to getting gas the stop-over allows the Senegalese customs people to wake everyone up at 1am, take down all their carry-ons from the overhead, stand by them for the most bullshit cursory inspection of all time, and then come back around to spray everyone with some sort of aerosol bug spray/disinfectant stuff. Man was that an annoying stop.
And I was damn close to developing bed sores on my ass before the flight was half over.
Ah, Meeta.
